Sometimes some good can come out of a bad situation, and this is one of those times. GSRA was contacted about a female gsd that had been abandoned, along with her 2 six month old mixed pups, during hurricane Florence. Well, we swooped in to save the family.
Let me introduce you to Stevie, (as in Stevie Nicks). This dog is a stunning sable who is approx 6 years old. Stevie is a tall and statuesque dog. She is approx 75 pounds, and is a large girl. Don't let her age fool you. She is a fun, energetic and very athletic girl.
Stevie is such a sweet girl! Stevie can be a bit apprehensive and unsure when meeting new people, but once she is comfortable with you, she is a total velcro dog and will be totally devoted to you. Stevie is exceptionally well mannered. She is non destructive and fairly quiet. Stevie just wants to be near her people. Like really near. She will stay very close, and is very responsive to being called. Stevie appears to have had some training...she knows how to sit and down, has pretty good recall, walks very well on the leash, and loves to ride in the car. Well, she likes the car a bit too much! She will pull towards the car, anticipating going for a ride. Once you get past the car, she will walk very nicely on the leash! :) Stevie is housebroken and crate trained. She will stand nicely and not resist being bathed. Stevie loves her people, and will happily sleep in the bed with you if you will let her. If not, she will sleep quietly beside the bed.
Most sables are derived from working lines, and have to have a sense of purpose/job. Stevie is no exception. Stevie likes to play ball, but her favorite game is fetch with sticks. She is obsessed with sticks/branches/logs, etc. She seems to have a great deal of energy, and will happily chase the stick for as long as you will throw it for her.
Stevie has been around several of the foster dogs and has done very well. She does get a bit tense around the alpha female of the house. I think as long as she is not put with an overly dominant dog, she will do great. She is fantastic around calmer dogs, and tries to herd and be the "fun police" when a group of dogs starts playing. Stevie needs a job!
Stevie is an exceptional example of the breed in looks, personality, and athleticism. Stevie will be a great companion for someone willing to work with her on gaining a bit more confidence, and who is willing to spend a lot of time interacting with her and giving her a sense of purpose/job. She is a fabulous dog, and will be a great companion for some lucky family.
Stevie is heartworm positive and needs to go through treatment. Stevie will hopefully begin treatment at the beginning of December. Come and meet her soon, she will be quite popular!
